Marine Knowledge Sharing Platform for Federating Responsible Research and Innovation Communities

Marine Knowledge Sharing Platform for Federating Responsible Research and Innovation Communities

Project Implementation Period:
May 2016 - April 2019
Specific Funding Programme:

Horizon 2020

Budget:

€2,999,943.75

About the Project:

The MARINA project will engage citizens, researchers, policy makers, industrial and societal actors in order to share knowledge, include the citizens’ vision and societal needs, create a synergy between research and innovation and the environmental safeguard. The Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) process will achieve these objectives: RRI is a new approach to science whereby all actors engaged can effectively make their voice heard in the whole research process and share their ideas with those who develop new solutions. Thanks to the on-field experience, the MARINA project will stregthen this systematic approach, making it transferable and reproducible for any RRI thematic domain. The RRI approach will be used with all stakeholders in 8 strategic marine topics involving all the Horizon2020 societal challenges:

  • Marine biotech
  • Sea Transportation
  • Deep sea mining (including bio prospecting)
  • Marine Change caused by climate
  • Renewable energy (wave, wind, tidal)
  • Tourism and coastal cities
  • Fishing and aquaculture
  • Pollution caused by human land and sea pressures.

In a “contagious” context among issues and actors, the project aims to federate all other EU-funded RRI projects, including those not related to marine issues, in order to develop the RRI Roadmap, starting from its best practices and its limitations, and making it useful for many societal challenges. MARINA will develop a better alignment between research and innovation and societal needs, transferable also to other important areas such as nanotechnology, biotechnology etc.
